Asbestos is a term for some minerals with a fibrous texture, used in industry. They are silicates, so from naturally rocky origin, fibrous and having refractory properties.
The various categories of asbestos correspond to several mineral species :





Industrial use :

  • Chrysotile (white asbestos): serpentines group Mg3(Si2O5)(OH)4 CAS No 12001-29-5, from far the most used variety
  • Amosite (brown asbestos) amphiboles group (Fe, Mg)7(Si8O22)(OH)2 CAS No 12172-73-5
  • Crocidolite (blue asbestos): amphiboles group Na2Fe5(Si8O22)(OH)2 CAS No 12001-28-4

Few or no industrial use:

  • Anthophyllite: amphiboles group (Mg,Fe)7(Si8O22)(OH)2 CAS No 77536-67-5
  • Actinolyte: amphiboles group Ca2(Fe,Mg)5(Si8O22)(OH)2 CAS No 77536-66-4
  • Tremolite: amphiboles group Ca2Mg5(Si8O22)(OH)2 CAS No 77536-68-6
